From the Chairman’s Desk,
Direct Local Government Allocation – President Buhari Should Conclude This Now
Last week, the Nigerian Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) shared ₦902bn to the three tiers of government for the month of December. The allocation included ₦204bn which was received by local government councils (LG). The administration has continued to push efforts to release the funds directly into the local government accounts. This ideally should be standard, but the system runs in a circle on this policy.
At a speech in the Presidential Villa earlier in the month, the President accused state governors over misappropriation of local government funds, and ineffective resources management. He questioned the integrity of state leaders, and encouraged improved use of the federal allocation at all government levels.
AACS is of the opinion that the President must conclude the task of direct allocation of local govt funds to local councils that he started in 2021, and AACS commended https://lnkd.in/ep_9ymjF. The joint local government account (JAAC) where local govt allocations are deposited and managed by both the state and LGs, should be abolished. The LG is the closest authority to the people, and should be allowed to function effectively. In every clime where democracy thrives, the LG, City, County, Council or whatever is called thrives, and takes primary basic care of its local people. There must be transparent policies that ensure that funds allocated to councils are disbursed and received by the Chairmen, and the LG treasury directory.
The President made a bold move earlier to enforce this, and he must ensure this stands.
