  • The African exploits at the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup

From the Chairman’s Desk,

The African exploits at the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup

Cameroon at the ongoing FIFA World Cup beat the world number one ranked team, Brazil, while Morocco topped her group, beating the second highest ranked team, Belgium. Two of Africa’s five representatives qualified for the second round, while two other nations narrowly missed out, coming third in their groups, and Ghana recorded a win in a ‘group of death’. In the global tournament of the most loved sport, football, Africa has shown once again why it deserves respect, and perhaps more representation in a European-dominated tourney.

Of the 32 national teams competing at the World Cup, 14 teams have at least one player of African origin. The defending champions, France, are represented by fourteen players of African descent. In fact, African players represented 81% of the starting team for France in the last group game against Tunisia. Africa, the raw material basket of the world, also possesses the finest of its human resources, and needs to fight to bring these potentials to life. It is time the leaders of Africa become more selfless and put on the light in the continent, made perfect by nature.

AACS identifies with the statement made by the Moroccan Head Coach, Walid Regragui, “We are not representing Arabs. We are first of all representing Morocco, and then we are representing Africa. We are Africans as Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon and Tunisia. I don’t consider myself as an Arab from the Middle East, but African”. It speaks to the collaboration needed as Africans to develop the continent, improve intra-African trade, reduce border & barrier issues, and create an African economic union that the youths and future of the continent can be proud of.

Several western nations have found economic breaks, utilising the human & material resources capacity of the continent. The African citizenry must continue to innovate and explore more effective use of similar resources to develop its economies as finished products, and not as raw materials. The continent is at the throes of greatness.
